ACUPUNCTURE… WHAT IS IT?
Acupuncture has been gaining respect in the U.S. lately. Over 8 million Americans have so far used acupuncture for various conditions, according to National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a government agency. Many researchers used to think the effect of the acupuncture treatment was due to the placebo effect. However, more evidence such as brain scans, ultrasound and fMRI show that acupuncture triggers direct, measurable effects on the body.

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
In acupuncture theory, there are 360 major points on the skin that lie along 14 major channels, or meridians, in the body through which the Qi (pronounced “chee”) flows. Qi flows like rivers through the body to regulate internal organ systems and nourish the tissues. An obstruction of Qi flow is believed to cause all disharmony and ailments. Acupuncture is to remove the obstruction in the meridians so that the regular flow of the Qi is reestablished through the body.

NO PAIN, REALLY?
At BOOKS FAMILY HEALTH CENTER, we mainly utilize non-needle technique. This non-needle technique is called “contact-needle” that is unique to Japanese style acupuncture. In Japan, this method has been established since the 17th century.
Contact-needle technique is to use gold and silver Teishin (needles) of which tips are round; Teishin contacts acupuncture points on the skin. Since we do not insert needles to patients’ body, they do not experience any pain or discomfort associated with the regular needling method. Therefore, our method is very safe and ideal for a person who is very sensitive and have so-called needle phobia.

DOES CONTACT-NEEDLE STYLE ACTUALLY WORK WITHOUT INSERTING NEEDLES?
Acupuncture points are located on the skin, not within the muscles or internal organs. Thus, acupuncture treatment can be effectively performed by slightly stimulating those acupuncture points located on the skin.
